We recently launched Beam® SmartPremiumsTM, the most innovative dental insurance plans in decades. While this post shares a bit about Beam®’s vision and why we launched SmartPremiumsTM, I want to take a minute to address some common questions we’ve received, starting with:

How do SmartPremiumsTM work?

Here’s the short answer: SmartPremiumTM plans allow clients to save money on dental insurance by practicing good oral care habits, aka brushing your teeth!

When a client signs up for Beam® group dental insurance, each member receives a Beam® brush as part of their Beam® perks wellness package, which is included with each plan. The Beam® brush helps calculate a brush ‘score’ for each group, which is factored into underwriting at renewal, giving the opportunity to increase coverage or lower future premiums.

What type of group dental plans do you offer?

SmartPremiumsTM are offered in four tiers of plans, designed to meet the needs of a wide range of companies. We offer everything from basic, highly affordable dental plans (our Preventive tier) to more comprehensive dental insurance (Select tier). Do you offer SmartPremiumsTM for individual dental plans?

Not yet. At this point, we are only able to offer SmartPremiumsTM for fully insured groups.

How much can companies save?

It’s different every group, however, a group with excellent brushing habits can expect to save 10-25% over its current plan1. A client which chooses a richer benefit plan and is located in a more expensive zip code will be able to realize greater savings than a client with a lower tier plan.

That said, the higher the brush score, the greater the savings.

How often will the rate adjust?

Only at renewal. Just before your plan year is up, our underwriting team will look at your group’s brushing data and be able to offer discounts based on which grade you earn – A through D. Alternatively, you may be eligible for a more comprehensive dental plan at the same or similar rate as you’re currently paying.

Can a company’s rate go up (based on beam® score)?

Yes, a group rate can go up, but not because of the Beam® score. In fact, the rising average costs of delivering dental care is one of the reasons we started Beam® in the first place. Renewals are a convenient time for carriers to pass high support and utilization costs on to their clients. The Beam® score is specifically designed to counteract those rate hikes, either controlling or lowering premium costs for our groups. We think it’s unfair when groups have their rates generically raised, though the members of that group may be working hard to take good care of their teeth every day. Beam® is uniquely able to provide real value in this scenario, especially if your group gets an A or B Beam® score! Perhaps most importantly, we as Beam® are incentivized to help each member brush better and we’ll educate and engage throughout the year to work toward better coverage or a lower rates.

What if our employees want to use their SonicCare or Oral-B brushes?

We get it: there are other great toothbrushes out there. If some of our members love their current brush and do not want to use the Beam® brush, it will not affect premiums in a negative way. Our goal is to deliver new value and rewards for those who are participating in the ecosystem, not hurt those who aren’t!

What else do I need to know?

From the plan design and pricing side of things, that’s SmartPremiumsTM in a nutshell. However, all plans include Beam® perks – our quarterly dental goods wellness program – which you can read more about here. Not only does it help create better habits, your team will love it!
